Dr Gareth Morgan

Born in 1953 in Putaruru in the Waikato, Gareth grew up the second of five children. He attended Massey University and gained a BA (Hons) in Economics.


In the early eighties Gareth worked for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand while he completed his doctoral work through Victoria University gaining a PhD in Economics.


Gareth founded Infometrics Limited in 1983, a company dedicated to economic forecasting, which soon became one of New Zealand’s largest independent economics consultancy firms.


Appearing on many media outlets, Gareth became an outspoken voice critiquing the ethics and practices of the financial services industry. He went on to write numerous books on issues of public concern.


Gareth is the father of Sam Morgan the creator of TradeMe, and was an early director of the company. When TradeMe was sold to Fairfax media, Gareth and his wife Joanne decided to give away their $50 million share of the proceeds to charity. To do this they founded The Morgan Foundation which provides humanitarian aid throughout Asia and Africa.


Gareth and his wife Joanne have four children and four grandchildren.
