John Dew

John Dew was born in Waipawa in 1948, and later attended St Joseph’s Primary School, Waipukurau. After finishing his secondary education at St Joseph’s College in Masterton, he went on to study philosophy at Holy Name Seminary in Christchurch and then theology at Holy Cross College in Mosgiel.


John was ordained as a priest in 1976 and went on to hold appointments in Upper Hutt, Rarotonga and Mosgiel. In 1991, he went abroad to study spirituality at the Institute of St Anselm in Kent, United Kingdom.


Archbishop John Dew holds several other responsibilities within the Catholic Church. He is the President of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference, Moderator of the Tribunal, Military Ordinariate and President of the Federation of Catholic Bishops Conferences of Oceania. Announced as Cardinal-designate by Pope Francis in 2015 he then was elevated to Cardinal at the consistory. Later that year, he was appointed Cardinal-priest of Sant'Ippolito Church, Rome.
