Executive Director of Cheers

Matt Claridge is executive director of Cheers, an industry-funded organization Managed by The Tomorrow Project, who aims to tackle New Zealand’s problem drinkers through evidenced-based, targeted interventions that address the real reasons behind problem drinking. Through public education programmes, Cheers supports New Zealanders to make smarter choices to keep themselves safe and sociable when drinking.

Matt is responsible for leading the behaviour change, research, and partnership objectives of Cheers. Previously CEO of Water Safety New Zealand, Matt guided WSNZ through its governance reform and change and facilitated the development of the New Zealand Water Safety Sector Plan 2020, which lays out the foundation for improved sector focus to target the horrific New Zealand drowning toll.


Matt lives in Wellington and has four children.
