Sir Brian Lochore

Sir Brian Lochore

Former All Black and All Blacks coaching legend Sir Brian Lochore is known for his skills on the rugby field and for coaching the All Blacks to their only world cup victory.

Brian surprisingly didn't always have such grand rugby ambitions though. When he was very young, Brian dreamed of being a jockey, racing horses. As he grew, his size made that dream impossible and he took up tennis. He became the top tennis player in his home region of Wairarapa and ranked highly at a national age-group level.

Playing rugby as well throughout his schooling career he played his debut game as an All Black in 1963. Three years later he was appointed All Blacks captain by coach Fred Allen and he turned out to be one of New Zealand's most successful captains with just three losses in 18 tests.

Retiring from play in 1970 he moved into coaching, initially with Masterton club and then Wairarapa-Bush in 1980. He became an All Blacks selector in 1983 and coached the team from 1985 to their 1987 world cup victory.

Knighted in 1999, he was inducted into the Order of New Zealand in 2007.

Sir Brian lives in the Wairarapa with his wife Pam. They have three children.
