Sir Jerry Mateparae

Former Governor-General of New Zealand

Sir Jerry Mateparae is a former New Zealand soldier who served as the 20th Governor-General of New Zealand, the second Māori person to hold the office. He was Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force from 2006 to 2011 and served as the director of the New Zealand Government Communications Security Bureau. Following his term as governor-general, he was the High Commissioner of New Zealand to the United Kingdom from 2017 to 2020.

In June 2020, Jerry was named chair of The Healthier Lives National Science Challenge, a national research collaboration dedicated to achieving healthier lives for all New Zealanders.

Jerry is of Māori descent, with tribal affiliations to Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Ngāti Kahungunu. He is married to Lady Janine Mateparae and has five children.
