Br. Guy Consolmagno
Director of the Vatican Observatory
Br. Guy Consolmagno SJ is a Jesuit brother, planetary scientist, and Director of the Vatican Observatory. Born in Detroit, he holds degrees from MIT and a Ph.D. in planetary science from the University of Arizona. His research focuses on meteorites, asteroids, and the evolution of small bodies in the Solar System.
A former Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya, Br. Guy is an award-winning science communicator and author. His latest book, Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial?, explores big questions at the intersection of faith and science. He’s also co-author of the beloved astronomy guide Turn Left at Orion.
Known as “The Pope’s Astronomer,” he appears regularly on media like EWTN, NPR, and The Colbert Report, and writes a monthly column for The Tablet. In 2014, he received the Carl Sagan Medal for public communication in planetary science.
