Duncan Greive

Duncan was born in Auckland and spent the first ten years of his life in South London. After his family returned to Auckland, he attended Auckland Grammar and the University of Auckland, where he studied history. After leaving university at 21 to support his growing family, he worked as a postie and went on to complete his history degree part-time. While delivering mail, he began his career as a music reviewer for Real Groove magazine. Denied a promotion due to his lack of journalism qualifications, he enrolled in a journalism course and became the magazine's editor soon after graduating.

As a freelance journalist since 2009, Duncan has contributed to various publications, including New Zealand Geographic, Metro, The Guardian, and more. In 2015, he co-wrote New Zealand's bestselling book for the year, Dan Carter: My Story, with former All Black Dan Carter. In 2014, Duncan launched The Spinoff, an online news site that publishes breaking news, politics, pop culture, reviews, and social issues. Since its launch, the site has won numerous Canon Awards, while Duncan was named editor of the year and media visionary at the 2017 NZ Marketing magazine awards, while also being named 2016 Creative Entrepreneur of the Year.

Duncan lives in Auckland with his wife, Nicola, and three children.
